A practical launch checklist for your new software product
Check the first-use experience, payment and failure paths, launch materials, and support basics before you send new visitors to your app.
A launch-ready product is not a finished product. It is a product whose promise, first useful action, and important limitations are clear enough for someone outside your team to try it.
Use this checklist as a short release review. Mark each item as working, not applicable, or a known limitation. A visible limitation is more useful than an unchecked assumption. Do not postpone a small launch for optional polish, but do stop for broken access, misleading pricing, or missing safeguards around money and user data.
Define the first useful outcome
Write a sentence that completes: “After arriving here, a new user should be able to…” Finish it with an observable outcome, not “see our features.” For a file tool, that might be downloading a converted file. For a planning app, it might be creating and saving a first plan.
Now test the route to that outcome:
- The homepage explains the intended user and the main task.
- The primary button starts the expected flow.
- Required accounts, permissions, or payments are disclosed before a surprise interruption.
- A new user can reach a useful result without your help.
- Empty states explain the next action.
Watch someone unfamiliar with the interface try it, if you can. Avoid explaining each step while they work: their hesitation tells you which labels or assumptions need attention. Write down the point where they get stuck and fix that before adding another feature.
Test a fresh account, not just your own
An account you have used for months carries helpful data, cached permissions, and remembered sessions. It is not a reliable test of onboarding.
Use a private browser window and a fresh test account. Check sign-in, sign-out, expired sessions, and the return path after authentication. If you support multiple OAuth providers, check each configured provider against the deployed origin. A development callback can work locally while failing on the public domain.
- A logged-out visitor can see the public pages.
- A regular user cannot open admin pages or another user's private records.
- Saving a draft and returning later preserves the work.
- Cancelling sign-in leaves a usable page instead of a loading loop.
- Errors explain what the person can try next without exposing secret keys or internal data.
This checklist is not a security audit. Access control needs server-side checks and appropriate database rules, not just hidden buttons.
Exercise the failure paths
The happy path proves that a feature can work. The failure path determines what a person experiences when a dependency, network, or input does not cooperate.
Try an invalid URL, an unsupported image, a slow request, a reload midway through a form, and a second click on a pending action. The interface should preserve useful work, prevent accidental duplicates, and offer an honest recovery action.
For a paid app, use the payment provider's test mode to check success, failure, cancellation, expiry, and duplicate notifications. Confirm that the server verifies payment before granting the purchased result. A successful screen in the browser is not, by itself, proof that money arrived. Do not use real customer funds as a substitute for a test plan.
- A failed payment leaves a clear status and a safe retry path.
- A repeated payment notification does not duplicate fulfillment.
- The actual price and currency match throughout checkout.
- A support contact and readable refund policy are available.
Prepare the public information
Write a short tagline, a factual description, and one concrete use case. Check your screenshots against the current interface. Remove claims about customers, speed, security, or integrations unless you can substantiate them.
Give important pages a descriptive title and summary. Google may choose different title links or snippets, so treat your metadata as useful input rather than guaranteed search-result copy. Google's title-link guidance and snippet guidance explain that distinction.
- Product name, website URL, and contact details are consistent.
- Logo and share image are legible on a small screen.
- Links point to the production domain, not localhost or a preview deployment.
- Privacy, terms, and payment-related policies describe what the product actually does.
- The basic SEO check has no unexplained critical failures.
Run a small-screen and keyboard pass
Open the launch page on a phone or a narrow browser viewport. Read the main copy, complete the primary form, and close every dialog. Look for clipped buttons, horizontal scrolling, images that move the layout, and text hidden beneath a sticky element.
Then navigate with the keyboard. Controls should have readable labels, visible focus, and a sensible order. You should be able to submit a form and leave a dialog without a mouse. A polished screenshot is not the same as an operable interface.
Plan the first day after launch
Choose one person to watch error reports and answer messages. Keep a short note containing the deployed version, important service dashboards, and how to roll back a broken release. If you are a solo builder, choose a launch window when you can be available.
Make a small list of questions you want the launch to answer: Do the right people understand the use case? Where do they stop? What do they ask for repeatedly? Those questions give the day a purpose even if attention is modest.
